Welcome To The WEB Site That Will Help You Build Smarter!Special AnnouncementThe new book, The Difference is in the Details: The Homeowner’s Planning Guide to Building a Functional Home, is almost here! Sign up for notification of its release by sending an email to NewBook@Buildingtips.net. I’m on the final lap of my new eBook; A 300-page planning guide for building a functional home. The Difference is in the Details contains hundreds of tips and reminders, as well as more than 500 photographs, to help make your home the best it can be. Homeowners who haven’t been through the building process before assume that someone is addressing their every concern, even those concerns they don’t know they have. Sadly, this is not always the case. As they should be, builders, architects, and interior designers are focused on their individual, specific areas of expertise. As a result, and despite the best intentions of all involved, concerns for some of the practical aspects of everyday life—those things that fall into the realm of what we call "function"—often fall through the cracks. When the project is over, the architect, the builder, and the designer move on, but the homeowner is often left with a litany of continuing irritations and a list of "I wish I would have’s." This eBook is designed to reduce or eliminate those irritations and that list. In other words, The Difference is in the Details is meant to help every homeowner fill the function gap in residential construction. But wait; there’s more! (Not to sound like an infomercial) Functional design covers more than convenience. Energy efficiency, disaster mitigation, indoor air quality, and accommodations for aging in place are also important considerations of a house that "works" for its owners and for the world in which we live. Plus understanding the options for building green—choosing products and processes that make our dwellings energy-efficient and healthier—let us contribute to a safer, more sustainable planet for ourselves and for future generations. The Difference is in the Details provides tips, reminders, and education in all of these categories, starting from the ground up. In fact, pertinent tips have their own designations such as Green, Healthy Home, Energy Efficiency, Disaster Mitigation, Storage and Organization, Ease of Cleaning, and Universal Design. The eBook sorting feature allows you to isolate one or more of these categories, plus you’ll have access to hundreds of live links for more information. In addition to tips on plumbing, wiring, roofing, and hundreds of other topics, it also covers information about warm and dry foundations, insulation, and HVAC, as well as sound advice on managing the financial aspects of your building project. Make your new or remodeled home the best it can be. Sign up for notification of the book’s release by sending an email to NewBook@Buildingtips.net.
It wasn’t long before Tracy realized the problem: there’s a piece missing from the building process. The architect creates a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing design; the builder executes this design in a workmanlike manner; the designer provides the finishing touches to create a beautiful environment. But the functional aspects of the design – the little (or sometimes not-so-little) things that make a house really “work” – are no one’s direct responsibility. Instead, homeowners are on their own, making multiple decisions with limited information; sometimes not knowing the questions, let alone the answers; and usually increasing the cost of the project as a result. Tracy formed Detailed Solutions to provide that missing piece. Using techniques outlined in her book, along with detailed checklists and hands-on consulting services, Tracy helps homeowners take control of the budget process while at the same time creating a functional environment that meets their unique needs. When Tracy and her husband, Mike, set out to build their own 5000-square-foot custom home in 2003, they incorporated many of the techniques and suggestions she offers her clients. The result: Their new home was completed on time, with a single change order, at only one percent over budget! As a Home Design Function Analyst, Florida Green Home Standard Certifying Agent, and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, Tracy addresses the functional aspects of home design and usage, including items such as energy efficiency, disaster mitigation, air quality, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and storage. By working with homeowners to focus on their daily habits and preferences, Tracy helps them to create living spaces that support and complement their lifestyle, while at the same time teaching techniques to manage the bottom line.
